CADETSHIPS, HONG KONG AND STRAITS SETTLEMENTS.
With a view to supply the Civil Service in Hong Kong and the Straits Settlements, Cadetships have been established, the holders of which are required to devote themselves to learning the Chinese and Malay languages. Cadets appointed to Hong Kong will be expected to learn Chinese only, but those appointed to the Straits will be called upon to study Malay, Chinese, or both, as the Colonial Government may direct, after their arrival' in the Colony.
I. The cadets are appointed after a competitive examination before the Civil Service Commissioners from amongst candidates nominated by the Secretary of State.
The examinations for these appointments will commence on the first Tuesday of August in each year. The number of candidates to be selected will be determined by the Secretary of State according to the requirements of the service.
When applications to the Secretary of State for nominations proceed from persons of whom he has no direct knowledge they should be accompanied by recommendations from persons known to him, or occupying positions of professional or other distinction.
II. Each candidate must be between the ages of 19 and 24 on the first day of exami nation and must satisfy the Civil Service Commissioners that he is duly qualified in respect of health and character.*
III. The heads of examination are as follows:--
A.-OBLIGATORY.
1. Exercises designed to test handwriting and orthography.
2. Arithmetic, including vulgar and decimal fractions,

3. Latin and one of the following languages, Greek, French, German, Italian. qualifying test will be translation from the language; but marks will be given also for translation into it, and in the case of modern languages for colloquial proficiency.
4. English composition including précis writing.
5. Pure and mixed mathematics.
B.-OPTIONAL.
6. Geography and ancient or modern history, including a period to be selected by the candidate.
7. The elements of constitutional and international law and political economy.
8. Geology, civil engineering, and surveying.
Every candidate must show a competent knowledge of the first four subjects and may select any two of the optional subjects.
IV. Priority of choice of Colony will be given to successful candidates according to their position in the competitive examination.
V. A professorship of Chinese having been lately founded at Oxford, the successful candidates in each yearly examination will be required to proceed to the University in the next October term, and to remain there for two years for the purpose of studying that language. They will also be expected to direct their attention to the study of law and political economy. Arrangements have been entered into with the Master and fellows of Balliol College by which the cadets will be enabled to enjoy the privileges of membership, and will be subject to the supervision of the college authorities without the necessity of going through the matriculation examination required for undergraduates, or of proceeding to a degree. They will receive an allowance of 150%. per annum from colonial funds, to provide for their maintenance during the period of their residence. * The Medical Examination does not ordinarily take place until the result of the competition is known; but candidates may, by application to the Civil Service Commissioners, obtain permission to undergo it earlier.
